Robert Guiscard

Robert the "Crafty" (Guiscard), the Norman (q.v.) adventurer who conquered Byzantine southern Italy (q.v.) from 1057-1071. In 1059 Pope Nicholas II (q.v.) legitimized his rule in return for an alliance, recognizing him as duke ofApulia and Calabria (qq.v.). In 1071 his forces conquered Byzantium's (q.v.) last stronghold, Bari (q.v.), in 1071. Palermo in Sicily (qq.v.) fell in 1072 to the Normans. Robert and his son Bohemund (q.v.) invaded Byzantine possessions in northern Greece (q.v.) in 1081-1082, hoping to march eastward on the Via Egnatia (q.v.). Alexios I (q.v.) eventually succeeded in stemming their assault, reconquering Dyrrachion (q.v.) after the death of Guiscard in 1085.
